How to buy a Tokunbo car in Lagos safely
"Tokunbo" means the car was used abroad before being imported. It's usually cheaper than brand new and often better kept than Nigerian-used — but only if you check it properly.
1. Confirm it's truly Tokunbo
Ask for the Bill of Lading and port clearance papers. A genuine foreign-used car should have customs duty paperwork you can check with the Nigeria Customs Service.
2. Check the VIN history
Run the chassis (VIN) number through a vehicle history service to spot accident, flood or salvage records before you travel to see it.
3. Inspect in daylight with a mechanic
Meet in a busy public place. Check for rust, uneven paint, flood marks under the carpets, engine noise and gearbox response, and take a proper test drive.
4. Verify papers in your name
Make sure the customs papers, proof of ownership and registration details match the car and the seller. Budget for registration and number plates in Lagos.
5. Pay safely
Avoid sending full payment before you see the car. Use escrow or pay on delivery where the seller offers it, and keep all chats and receipts.
